Apples, Honey, and Sweet Berry Wine

I think I know four Jewish people, maybe five.  I didn't grow up in an insanely diverse community (especially in religious terms).  We had a Catholic church, a Lutheran church, and a Free (non-denominational) church - but no mosques, temples, synagogues, etc.  Why am I thinking about this, and posting about this you might ask?  Well...today is Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year; a day spent with family, in prayer, and in contemplation of what you have to be thankful about in your life.

Louisa was kind enough to invite myself and a few other friends over to her house for a lovely evening to celebrate this day...and I am very, very happy I was able to partake in such a good time.  The details aren't important - but what does matter is that Louisa shared a tradition with us that was very meaningful and I am totally thankful for that.

Common consensus of thanks:
Families, friends, health, health of our families, security (financially...even Sam), having a roof over our heads, senses of sight and sound (Ryan), having love in our lives, our jobs, our bikes, Sunday dinner, each other, 2008 - the year of change - still being a good year...the list goes on, but you get the idea.

As I was driving Sam home we were talking about how good we have it, and how there are people out there who just don't get it.  Even when shit is tough (I had to lend money to Tucker and in return borrow money from Mike (some of which I lent to Sam) this week) life is still so good.  So far this year has been crazy - we've all seen a lot of ups and downs, big and small, but we're working through them together.

I know this is all kind of corny - but it's what's on my mind.  So there.  I love you all - and I'm thankful that I'm going to bed before 1:00am at least one night this week!

Did you know that people here get the day off for this holiday? Even kids get the day off from school, just like every Jewish holiday, dude I think we got screwed. You should have seen it here Monday, the place was empty..
